Causes of Foot Fungus and how to protect against them

Fungal infections on the foot are very common and can cause a lot of discomfort to people affected by it. It mostly occurs in sportsmen because they often have to exert a lot of pressure on their foot. This is also the reason why foot fungus is often referred to as athlete’s foot.

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot or Tinea Pedis, is a type of fungal infection which occurs in the foot. This fungal infection can cause itching, burning, peeling and can cause sores and blisters on your skin as well. This is a very common condition and the fungus spreads in moist and warm environment. This infection is mainly found in sportsmen and athletes, since most of the time their feet are moist, when they are wearing socks. This condition is most common in warmer conditions. Athlete’s foot can occur more regularly in people who wear tight shoes and use pools or common bathrooms.

What are the causes of Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a microscopic fungus which lives on the dead tissue of toenail, hair and other outer skin layers. There are as many as four types of fungus that can cause athlete’s foot. The most common fungus is Trichophyton rubrum.

What are the common symptoms of Athlete’s Foot?

Symptoms and signs of athlete’s foot often vary from person to person. Having said that most of the common symptoms may include:

  • Blisters, Redness and softening and breaking of skin.
  • Cracking, peeling, and scaling of feet
  • Burning, itching or both.

What are the different types of Athlete’s Foot?

There are different types of athlete’s foot:

  1. Moccasin

This is a very common condition and can cause athlete’s foot. It normally occurs in between the two smallest toes. This kind of athlete’s foot can result in scaling, itching and burning as the infection can spread to the complete foot.

  1. Interdigital

They are called as toe web infection which is most common type of athlete’s foot. It normally occurs in between the two smallest toes. This kind of athlete’s foot can result in scaling, burning and itching as the infection can spread to whole foot.

  1. Vesicular

This is the least common type of athlete’s foot. This is the condition which normally starts off with a sudden outbreak of fluid filled blisters under your skin. Most of the times, blisters are developed under the foot. It can also appear between the toes, on top of the foot and on the heel.
