What is Ingrown hair?

Ingrown hair occurs when hair follicles grow back in the skin and not on the surface of the skin. Most of the times, hairs that are waxed, plucked or shaved grow back again in the skin and on the surface of the skin. Hair which grows inwards appear as small, circular shaped bumps which are known as papules or pustules. In a few cases, skin in and around ingrown hair may get darker. This condition is known as hyperpigmentation. During this condition, a person can also experience itching and pain in the area surrounding the ingrown hair.

What causes ingrown hair?

Whenever you remove hair, it has a tendency to grow back. Most of the times hair shafts will arise in the skin and may not cause any kind of problem. Other types of hair may even grow under the skin. Whenever this happens, your body may respond to the ingrown hair with sensitivity. This is why itching, redness, swelling or light pain begins.

How to treat ingrown hair?

Ingrown hair does not require any type of treatment. This is because they can and do diminish on their own without any need of treatment. But at times, some treatment may be necessary. Sometimes, however, one may need a treatment. Here, are some of the things that an individual should try to get rid of ingrown hair.

Stop removing hairs from that particular area

If you are experiencing ingrown hair in a particular area of your body, then it is recommended that you should stop waxing, shaving, or plucking that area, until the ingrown hair is removed. Because it will only aggravate this condition. as ingrown hair makes the area very sensitive area and removing the hair will further damage it. Picking or scratching at the ingrown hair will also make it uncomfortable. This can even lead to other skin infections or may even leave some kind of scar.

Dead Skin Removal

Gently exfoliating and washing the ingrown hair can also help the hair to return to the skin. If this does not work then your doctor may recommend you a drug which can be helpful getting rid of the ingrown hair. Retinoids, like tretinoin, can also increase the process of clearing of dead skin cells. It should also be noted that any such drug should be only used after consultation with the doctor.
