Eat smartly during the heartburn
Heavy and large meals put a lot of pressure on the muscle of stomach and normally can help keep the content of the stomach from getting back into the esophagus. The more you eat, the longer it takes for your stomach to digest the food which can contribute to building of reflux. Instead having frequent and smaller meals can be very instrumental in reducing the reflux.
Eat three hours before Sleeping
Having meal or snack just before eating can worsen reflux which can cause heartburn. It is recommended that one should eat at least three hours before sleeping.
Do not exercise just before meals
It is recommended that at least couple of hours of time should be given for the food to digest before exercising. One should also not lie down after eating as it could leave proper time for stomach for clearing out.
Raising the torso just a bit by using a wedge shaped cushion can be very helpful in easing the nighttime heartburn. Wedge shaped cushion are available in many medical supply companies and also in some home goods stores. Here it should be noted that one should not prop up shoulders and head with random pillows as by doing so can actually put even more pressure on the stomach by curling you up at waist.
Chew Sugarless gum after every meal
Chewing gum will increase the salivation that can help in neutralizing the acids, ease off the esophagus and wash the acid back into the stomach. Gums which have peppermint should be avoided as peppermint can trigger heartburns.
If you are overweight, then it can add ever more pressure on the stomach and will push all the acid gases from stomach to esophagus. Tight clothing and belts can also be a factor which can increase the probability of heartburn.
